Overview

A long but easy day for families, couples and friends who want waterfalls and old temples without a night away. A private car and our driver pick you up at home at 6 AM, so we clear the city before the expressway traffic builds, and tolls, parking and driver charges are already paid. We follow the Kaveri: Gaganachukki and Bharachukki falls at Shivanasamudra in the morning, lunch and the sand temples at Talakadu, then the star shaped Keshava temple at Somanathapura. Expect about 6.5 to 7 hours in the car across the day and a drop back home at about 8 PM, later if Bengaluru traffic is bad. Go between August and January for full falls: from March to May the falls are a thin trickle and the Talakadu sand is very hot.

Pickup at 6 AM and breakfast at Maddur. Leave the expressway for Malavalli and see Gaganachukki and Bharachukki, the two falls of Shivanasamudra. Lunch in Talakadu and walk among temples half buried in sand by the Kaveri, then the carved Hoysala temple at Somanathapura before the drive home. About 340 km in all, back home by about 8 PM.

The Kaveri drops into a deep gorge in a wide horseshoe. You watch from a viewpoint with railings above the falls. The flow is biggest from August to November and thin in summer.

The wider of the two falls, a curtain of many streams. Steps lead down towards the pool for a closer view when they are open. The gate closes at about 5 PM.

Old temples by the Kaveri that sank under sand dunes over the centuries. See the Vaidyeshwara temple and the dug out Keerthinarayana temple, and walk on the soft sand. Free entry. The sand is hot after noon, so carry socks.

The Keshava temple of 1268, a Hoysala gem on a star shaped base with every inch carved. Quiet and well kept. Tickets are paid online at the gate, and last entry is about 5 PM.
