Jog Falls and Shivamogga Malnad Trail

A forest department safari bus takes you through big enclosures with lions, tigers and leopards, then you walk round the small zoo. The afternoon session runs 2:15 PM to 5 PM. Closed on Tuesdays and public holidays.

The forest department's elephant camp on the Tunga river, 14 km from Shivamogga. In the morning the mahouts bring the elephants to the river for their bath and feed. You watch from the viewing area. Elephant activities are closed on Wednesdays. Hands on bathing is not part of this trip.

A low dam across the Tunga a few minutes from the camp, with a wide, quiet stretch of water and forest hills behind.

The 2.7 km long dam on the Sharavathi that holds back a huge reservoir and decides how much water reaches Jog. You see it from outside, as the dam itself is controlled by the power company.

The Sharavathi drops about 253 m in four streams, Raja, Rani, Rocket and Roarer. Since May 2025 there is a new gate and viewing tower, a Rs 20 entry and a 2 hour viewing limit. Full from August to November, thin in winter, often nearly dry from February to May.

The double temple of Rameshwara and Veerabhadra built by the first Keladi chiefs, 8 km from Sagara, in a plain Hoysala and Dravida style with carved panels inside. The small Keladi museum nearby is worth a few minutes if it is open.

A large granite temple from the time Ikkeri was the Keladi capital, about 6 km south of Sagara, cared for by the Archaeological Survey of India. Look for the small Nandi carved from white stone.
