Overview

A 3 day road trip from Bengaluru to Wayanad in Kerala, through the Bandipur and Muthanga forests where you often see deer and elephants from the car. Your private car and driver pick you up at home and stay with you, and you sleep 2 nights in the hotel you pick, with breakfast. The pace is easy: one cave climb on Day 1, lakes, dams and tea country on Day 2, and Mysuru Palace on the drive home. Best from October to February. An honest note: the July 2024 landslide hit the Mundakkai and Chooralmala area near Meppadi. Most of Wayanad is open and welcoming visitors, but some spots in that belt (Chembra peak, Soochipara and Meenmutty falls, the 900 Kandi glass bridge) reopen and close with rain alerts and forest rules, so we keep them as optional and check the status the day before.

Think twice if

Someone in your group can't manage steep steps and rock (Edakkal caves). They can wait at the bottom.
You want to trek Chembra peak or see the Meppadi waterfalls for sure. Their status changes with rain and forest rules, so we can't promise them.
You get car sick on hill roads.

The highway runs through two tiger reserves. Watch for deer, peacocks and elephants. Stopping and getting out is not allowed inside the forest. The road is closed to traffic at night, so we always cross in daylight.

Edakkal caves

A short jeep or walk up from the parking, then about 30 minutes of steep steps and rock to the caves. Inside are stone carvings over 6,000 years old. Closed on Mondays and national holidays. Only about 1,920 visitors a day are allowed, so we go before lunch.
