A taste from your trip
Gommateshwara statue, Vindhyagiri hill
About 620 rock cut steps up Vindhyagiri hill to the 57 foot statue of Bahubali, carved from one stone around 983 AD. Shoes come off at the foot of the hill, so wear socks. The statue area is said to close from about 11:30 AM to 3:30 PM, so we climb in the morning. Dolis (carried chairs) wait at the foot for anyone who cannot climb, paid there.
If it rains: The rock steps on both Shravanabelagola hills get slippery in rain, so go slowly, hold the rails, or take a doli up Vindhyagiri. If it pours, wait in the car for a dry spell. If it is still wet after Vindhyagiri, skip the Chandragiri climb and see Bhandara Basadi in the town instead. Melkote works in light rain: spend longer inside the Cheluvanarayana temple and keep the Kalyani walk short. If clouds hide the sunset, we see the Yoga Narasimha temple and head home earlier.
