Overview

An easy day trip for families with children, couples and anyone who wants something different from the usual hill or temple run. A private car and our driver pick you up from home at 7 AM and bring you back by about 6:30 PM, with tolls, parking and driver charges already paid. You climb the granite hill at Ramadevara Betta, where Sholay was filmed and vultures still nest, see thousands of village objects at Janapada Loka, and spend time in a real Channapatna toy workshop watching artisans shape and colour wooden toys. The Kengal Anjaneya temple is an optional last stop. The best months are October to February, when the rocks are cool and the hills are green. Honest caveats: leaving Bengaluru on the Mysuru Road can be slow, the hill climb has a few hundred uneven steps, and the trip does not run on Tuesdays (Janapada Loka is shut) or Sundays (the workshop is shut).

Pickup at 7 AM and thatte idli for breakfast at Bidadi. Climb Ramadevara Betta, the Sholay hill and India's first vulture sanctuary, then walk through the Janapada Loka folk museum and have lunch next door. In the afternoon you watch Channapatna toys being made in a working toy workshop, with an optional stop at the Kengal Anjaneya temple. Home by about 6:30 PM. About 170 km in all.

The granite hill where Sholay was filmed, now India's first vulture sanctuary. A few hundred rock cut steps lead past a hill pond to a small temple and wide views over the boulders. The gate opens at about 9 AM. Vultures are rare, so treat a sighting as a bonus. Cash only at the gate.

Channapatna toy workshop

A real working toy unit. Watch artisans cut soft ivory wood, turn it on the lathe and colour it with lac and vegetable dyes while it spins. You can buy straight from the makers. The workshop is closed on Sundays, and we book your visit a day ahead.
