A taste from your trip
Gommateshwara statue, Vindhyagiri hill
About 620 rock cut steps up Vindhyagiri hill to the 57 foot statue of Bahubali, carved from one stone around 983 AD. Shoes come off at the foot of the hill, so wear socks. The statue area is said to close from about 11:30 AM to 3:30 PM, so we climb early. Dolis (carried chairs) are available at the foot for those who cannot climb, paid there.
If it rains: The climb at Shravanabelagola is on bare rock, which gets slippery in rain, so go slowly and use the hand rails, or take a doli. If it pours, wait it out in the car and climb in the next dry spell. Halebidu and Belavadi are fine in light rain, just walk the outer walls quickly and spend more time in the pillared halls. Skip the lake if it is cloudy and head to the hotel early.
